IMPART: Institute for Museum, Preservation & Archaeology Research and Training

St. Mary's College of Maryland

For three decades, Historic St. Mary's City and St. Mary's College of Maryland have offered a field school in historical archaeology. This is one of the oldest programs of its kind in the country and is a perfect example of the affiliation between the two institutions. The field school has a reputation for rigorous training and attracts students from all over the United States as well as from other countries. Archaeologists trained in the field school have gone on to hold important positions in all aspects of archaeological research in the United States. The school has contributed significantly to the history of Maryland and the development of historical archaeology. Excavations on such sites as St. John's, the Country's House, the Print Shop, and the Brick Chapel have revolutionized the understanding of colonial architecture and the material culture of the period. The school pioneered many of the techniques now thought of as standard in historical archaeology. It has been a leader in training the next generation of historical archaeologists.
